Case study: Micro welding In-Situ on Rotor Shaft

Scratches and Impact Marks After Coupling Removal

We were contacted to provide an in-situ repair solution on a rotor shaft. We utilized our mobile welding equipment that is fully class-approved for cold welding on high-carbon, typically non-weldable components.

Micro welding allows for the application of metal through low-punctual welding, attaching a metal plate or wire to the component. This repair method is fully class-approved, with each welding layer adding 0.2 mm of material.

Before starting, we ground and polished the damaged area to ensure a clean surface. We then performed a liquid penetrant inspection (LPI) to confirm there were no undetected cracks deeper within the shaft.
After the micro welding process, the repaired areas were hand-polished, followed by another LPI to verify the quality of the welding. Finally, a third-party company conducted a Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) in accordance with class regulations to ensure the repair met all standards.

The entire repair process was completed within 8 working days, enabling the vessel to resume normal operations without further delay.
