Case study: Repair of 120-Ton Rudder

MSC Loretta - Rudder Stock Cold Straightening and Full Repair

We carried out a complete rudder repair for the container vessel MSC Loretta after an unfortunate grounding.

In our workshop in Denmark, we cold straightened and repaired the 23-ton heavy rudder stock, measuring Ø720 x 6840 mm, along with other rudder parts.

Our on-site work included:

Welding of the rudder blade cone
Heat treatment of welded areas
Machining of the rudder blade cone
Fitting and installation

We later received a "Thank you letter" from Capt. Antonino De Maio.

Case study: In-situ machining of propeller shaft

In-situ Lathe Machining – Singapore

During scheduled docking at a shipyard in Shanghai, a container vessel experienced damage to the aft bearing journal of its Ø785 mm tail shaft. The affected area measured 2310 mm, and a conventional repair would have required full shaft removal from the vessel by cutting large access hole in the vessel’s hull—leading to extended downtime and higher costs.

MarineShaft was contracted to perform in-situ machining with our portable lathe, removing approximately 1.5 mm from the damaged surface.

Our service engineers also assisted and supervised the installation of the propeller shaft, intermediate shaft, and bearing.

case study: In-situ repair of thruster housing

NS Iona - On-Site Repair of Thruster Bearing Housing

NS Iona was in dock for its planned survey and inspection, which revealed damage to the steering tube bearing housings.

Four of our service engineers brought two sets of mobile boring equipment to carry out an urgent repair at a Danish shipyard. On-site, we bored the steering tube bearing housing to a new dimension of 880 mm.

Meanwhile, two oversized bushings were manufactured and delivered to the yard. To ensure precise fitting, the bushings were freeze-shrunk with liquid nitrogen before installation.

After mounting, we carried out final machining of the inner diameter to restore the original dimensions.
This job was completed in only 5 day.
