Case study: In-house urgent repair of gearbox housing

3D Scanning and laser cladding send the vessel back in operation with minimal downtime

A gearbox housing was sent to our workshop in Hirtshals, where it was cleaned, disassembled, and 3D scanned to check assembly flange flatness. The scan showed deflection within tolerance, but both bearing surfaces were damaged and ovalized due to bearing failure.

To repair them, we used laser cladding with Inconel 625. Due to the urgency, both laser cladding machines were run simultaneously, enabling quick rebuilding. The surfaces were then machined to original dimensions, and a final 3D scan confirmed flange flatness remained within tolerance.

The repaired gearbox was promptly returned, allowing the vessel to resume operations with minimal disruption.

Case study: Urgent repair of two Duplex Shaft seal liners

Laser Cladding of Two Damaged Duplex Shaft Seal Liners for Tunnel Thruster

Vessel M/V Wind of Change.

Each liner measured Ø339,85/270 x 185,5 mm. The liners had a surface layer of chromium, which we removed by machining, after which we conducted a liquid penetrant test of the surface.

We applied three layers of Stellite 21 by laser cladding, a process which adds 0,8 mm of material with each layer applied. The new material fuses to the base material, and an even harder and more wear-resistant surface is obtained.

The two liners were machined to the original dimensions, and we completed the job in only four days.
