MarineShaft provides repair and maintenance of marine thrusters of all types, including azimuth thrusters, Azipod-type units, and bow and stern thrusters.

Whether you require repair of individual components or a complete overhaul, we manage the full scope. We work on all key thruster components, including blades, hubs, shafts, couplings, housings, and bearings.

Our repairs include welding, laser cladding, straightening of blades and shafts, machining, and geometry verification using advanced 3D scanning technology. For thruster housings and bearing arrangements, we perform precision machining, line boring, and alignment to restore correct fit and function.

On-site Repair Solutions

In addition to our in-house capabilities, we provide extensive on-site services worldwide. Using portable machining equipment, our experienced service engineers carry out in-situ machining, welding, 3D measurement, alignment, and technical support.

With class-approved repair and welding procedures, we deliver reliable thruster and pod repairs—wherever the vessel is located.

All work is carried out in full compliance with the classification society's requirements.

Case study: Thruster shaft and coupling

Repair of STB og PS Thruster Shaft & Coupling Hub

MarineShaft received the thruster shafts and coupling hubs in our Hirtshals workshop, with damage to the cone surfaces. After inspection and material verification, the damaged areas were machined and prepared for repair.

The cone surfaces were restored using laser cladding with Inconel 625, followed by final precise machining to achieve the correct fit and dimensions. Throughout the process, measurements and 3-part NDT inspections were conducted to ensure quality.

Final blue-fit testing confirmed proper contact, and a RINA class surveyor approved the repair before the components were delivered, ready for installation.

Case Study: Thruster propeller shaft

Repair of thruster shaft bearing journals

The thruster propeller shaft was received in our workshop with damage to the bearing journals. Following inspection and class approval of the repair procedure, the affected areas were machined to remove damaged and heat-affected material.

The bearing journals were rebuilt using laser cladding with Inconel 625 and subsequently machined back to original dimensions and surface finish. Hardness testing, NDT inspections, and control measurements were carried out throughout the process to ensure quality.

The repair was reviewed and approved by the class surveyor, and the shaft was delivered ready for reinstallation, including full documentation.

Case study: Azimuth thruster repair

Afloat repair of Thruster flange deformation

An azimuth thruster foundation flange with connection issues was identified due to surface deformation. To avoid docking delays, the repair was carried out afloat while the vessel was alongside.

Using portable milling equipment, the flange surface was machined to restore correct flatness within acceptable tolerances, and the O-ring groove was re-machined to ensure proper sealing. Final alignment of the electric motor was also completed.

The repair eliminated the need for docking while restoring full functionality, demonstrating an efficient on-site solution for large-scale components.

Case study: 3D scanning of Azimuth Thruster Housing

On-site 3D scanning of three Azimuth Thruster Housings and repair of the three Azimuth Thruster propellers

An offshore support vessel experienced damage to its thrusters, requiring replacement of all three thruster shafts. MarineShaft was engaged to perform on-site 3D scanning of the thruster housings to verify alignment and dimensions of the bearing seats.

Using portable 3D scanning equipment, accurate measurements confirmed that all housings were within tolerance and required no further repair, supporting the installation of new shafts.

In parallel, the three thruster propellers were repaired in our workshop, where damaged blade edges were rebuilt by welding and restored to original geometry. All work was carried out in accordance with class requirements, ensuring reliable performance upon reinstallation.
