Twisted rudder stock

We want to share a recent repair project that combined workshop repairs, manufacturing, and on-site machining to restore a damaged rudder arrangement on an LNG carrier.

The vessel experienced steering gear maneuvering issues and suspected damage to the rudder equipment. A shipyard in Portugal inspected the vessel and this revealed a torsional deformation of the rudder stock.

MarineShaft sent a repair solution for the full scope of work.

The repair solution was not simply to straighten the rudder stock. Although class-approved cold straightening could restore the required straightness and run-out, straightening alone could not remove the torsional twist in the keyway area.

The rudder stock and steering equipment were sent to our workshop in Denmark, where the repair started with a run-out measurement and an NDT inspection.
